Qualcomm leads the global cellular IoT chip market with a 38% share in shipments. Qualcomm's market share in key segments such as automotive, router/CPE, retail, asset tracking and industrial IoT has grown year over year. However, competition from local Chinese players such as UNISOC and ASR in key fast-growing sectors such as LTE Cat-1/Cat-1 bis and NB-IoT has limited Qualcomm's growth opportunities in the world's largest IoT market. However, Qualcomm has expanded its IoT solutions portfolio to target specific verticals such as retail, automotive, industrial IoT and smart cities. In addition, Qualcomm has launched supporting IoT services across more than 30 verticals to enhance platform support for IoT-as-a-Service (IoTaaS) applications and accelerator programs such as smart cities, adopting a more ecosystem-led approach approach, bringing different stakeholders across the industry value chain.

UNISOC is the world's second largest cellular IoT chip maker with strong performance in NB-IoT and 4G Cat 1 technologies. Its cellular IoT chip shipments continued to grow for nearly four quarters, successfully filling the gap left by HiSilicon in the market. In addition, the high-end technologies of 5G, 4G Cat 4 and above are steadily improving, successfully expanding the customer base to Quectel, Fibocom, China Mobile and more module manufacturers. This helped UNISOC capture more than a quarter of its shipments in the fourth quarter of 2021. At present, it focuses on low-end applications such as smart meters, POS and industrial, and has launched V510 baseband and V516 platforms for 5G, which are widely used in FWA routers and CPE equipment.

ASR Microelectronics maintained its No. 3 position in the cellular IoT chip market in the fourth quarter of 2021 due to strong performance in the 4G Cat 1 and 4G Cat 4 modules segment. More recently, ASR competed with UNISOC for 4G Cat 1 and Qualcomm for 4G Cat 4 module-based applications. However, ASR has yet to roll out NB-IoT and 5G solutions and must therefore commit to its long-term capabilities and strategies to maintain this high growth rate for the next 2-3 years. The company added capacity this year to meet demand. ASR has established local partnerships with many module manufacturers in 4G Cat 1 and Cat 4 technologies, such as Quectel, Longsun Technology and Zero Zero Intelligence.

MediaTek held the fourth position in the market in the fourth quarter of 2021. However, it hasn't paid much attention to the cellular IoT market compared to the smartphone chip market, which is one of the key reasons it lost 4% of market share sequentially in the quarter. MediaTek is also focusing on 5G enhancements, with the recently launched Kompanio 900T, a new 5G platform for tablets, laptops and other IoT devices. The MediaTek T750 chip is already very popular in FWA and CPE equipment.

Shanghai Eigencomm achieved strong growth of 3,743% from a small base due to its partnerships with Quectel and Fibocom for NB-IoT module chips.

Sequans has grown with its combination of powerful 4G, LPWA and 5G chips. The French manufacturer has strong traction in key markets such as asset tracking, healthcare and smart meters.

Sony Semiconductor (formerly Altair Semi) saw growth in the quarter with strong partnerships with Sierra Wireless and Wistron NeWeb targeting the smart metering, asset tracking and smart city markets.

Samsung has launched a 5G chip for automotive applications. If it can form a close partnership with the automaker, it may become a competitor that Qualcomm and MediaTek cannot ignore.

Intel and HiSilicon are still providing their remaining inventory to some of the major customers where chip module designs are located.

Talking about the application side of the chip, Neil Shah, research vice president, said: "Smart metering, POS, router/CPE, industrial and automotive are the top five applications for shipments in the fourth quarter of 2021. PC's largest year-on-year growth was 245 %, followed by smart meters, up 124% year-on-year, and routers/CPEs up 112% year-on-year. Routers/CPEs, PCs, and industrial applications are the top three 5G applications. For NB-IoT, smart meters, asset tracking, and energy are Top 3 applications. 4G Cat 1 is gaining popularity in POS, industrial and smart metering due to its high performance and low power architecture. We predict that smart metering, industrial and router/CPE will achieve maximum in the future increase."
